Educational Objectives

After completing this course, the reader should be able to:

  • Understand biofilm formation and its relationship to dental unit waterlines.
  • Identify health risks associated with contaminated dental unit waterlines and take mitigating steps to protect the health of patients and all dental health care personnel (DHCP).
  • Develop and implement best practices for waterline maintenance.
  • Monitor waterline quality and perform routine maintenance procedures to prevent contamination.

Abstract

Dental unit lines supply a necessary source of aqueous solution required for many patient care procedures. If waterlines are not maintained and tested properly, the water will become unsafe for human consumption and pose a major health hazard to patients and dental health care personnel (DHCP). Waterlines easily become contaminated with a wide  variety of organisms, many of which are pathogenic. It is important that dental facilities have a well-structured infection prevention plan that includes policies and standard-operating procedures dedicated to water quality. This course will present current evidence-based science and best practice management solutions in waterline sourcing, maintenance, monitoring, and testing that will allow DHCP to deliver safe patient care.
