Educational Objectives

After completing this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the nomenclature and descriptions of the three CDT Procedure Codes for implant maintenance in CDT 2025.
  • Describe when an implant maintenance procedure would be selected for a patient’s treatment and why, including whether they can be done during a prophylaxis or periodontal maintenance appointment.
  • Describe various verbal strategies for communicating with patients about their need for regular implant maintenance procedures and the importance of allowing your office to help them manage their implant investment.

Abstract

Acceptance level for dental implants is increasing among patients due to the limitations of removable prosthetics. According to the American Dental Association, dental providers in the United States place over 5 million dental implants each year.

Many clinicians are unaware of the two implant maintenance procedure codes which have been included in the ADA’s CDT manual beginning with D6080 (CDT 1 - 1990-1995) and D6081 (CDT 2017). With advances in technology and treatment modalities, their current descriptors had become obsolete.

In CDT 2025, these two codes were revised and an additional code introduced. This presentation will explain these changes and describe when and under what conditions they would be used.
