Abstract

The most widely used method for controlling pain during dental procedures is still the intraoral administration of local anesthetics. Registered dental hygienists (RDHs) have been administering injections for more than fifty years in the U.S. However, RDHs remain under-utilized, and this scope of practice continues to be controversial. The course will evaluate the landscape and changing methodology in the administration of pain management and relief by dental hygienists. Participants will discover the policy and politics that impact utilization, outcomes, and what methods are preferred. , what still holds popularity, and what changes are needed today and in the future.

Sean G. Boynes, DMD, MS

Dr. Sean G. Boynes is a trained dental anesthesiologist dedicated to advancing safe, effective, and efficient dental care of the highest quality. With a focus on underserved and vulnerable populations, Dr. Boynes has been instrumental in shaping policies that promote equitable access to oral health services. His collaborations with state and national agencies have led to meaningful improvements in care standards, particularly for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), reinforcing his commitment to making high-quality dental care accessible to all. His advocacy has driven systemic improvements in training and regulation, emphasizing the need for compassionate and high-standard care across the dental field.

Dr. Boynes also serves in leadership roles that bridge clinical practice with technological innovation. At the Harmony Health Foundation, he develops programs to address healthcare gaps in marginalized communities, ensuring sustainable access to essential oral health services. In his work with Oral Genome, Dr. Boynes advances the field of point-of-care assessments through the use of salivary testing technologies, empowering providers to offer preventative and personalized care. Outside of dentistry, Dr. Boynes is a passionate musician who has returned to the studio to record new music with Maverick Smith, blending his creative drive with his dedication to supporting healthcare initiatives, as proceeds from their recent album benefit the Harmony Health Foundation.
