Abstract
Local anesthesia is dentistry’s primary functional relationship with patients for safe and successful pain management during treatment. This webinar will address current perspectives on the use of articaine, epinephrine and buffering local anesthetic drugs. Current MRD guidelines, recommended dosing “rules” for the young to older patient, and formulas for safe and effective anesthesia will be highlighted.

Author Bio
Mel Hawkins, DDS, BSCD AN, FADSA, DADBA
Mel Hawkins graduated from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry, with his DDS degree in 1973 and returned for his formal training in dental anesthesiology at the same university from 1975-1976. He is the founding director of the intravenous sedation, continuing education program at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, and was the founding director of the intravenous sedation program at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry. He has over 30 years of private practice experience in Toronto, Canada, with special emphasis on pain control and patient management and various local anesthesia requirements for the dental patient. In addition to lecturing throughout the U.S. and Europe for over 20 years, Dr. Hawkins is board certified as a diplomate of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiologists and is a fellow of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. Dr. Hawkins holds fellowships with the International College of Dentists and with the Pierre Fouchard International Academy. He has served on the continuing education committee for the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. Additionally, Dr. Hawkins is internationally recognized as an author, lecturer, and clinician on topics concerning sedation and pain-free management of the dental patient.
Kathy B. Bassett, BSDH, RDH, MEd
Kathy B. Bassett has dedicated over 40 years to a variety of general and specialty dental environments, including over 30 years as professor of dental hygiene at Pierce College, Lakewood, WA, and 10 years as affiliate professor of oral health sciences, School of Dentistry, University of Washington, Seattle, WA. Kathy shares unique insights for successful local anesthesia to benefit both patients and clinicians, gleaned from a diverse background in dentistry, dental hygiene, and dental education. She is a co-author of Local Anesthesia for Dental Professionals and has co-authored numerous textbook chapters including in Clinical Practice of Dental Hygiene by Esther Wilkins, and Mosby’s Dental Hygiene: Concepts, Cases, and Competencies. She has also co-authored articles in Dimensions of Dental Hygiene, Decisions in Dentistry, and Dental Advisor. Kathy has presented hundreds of CE courses locally, nationally, and internationally on local anesthesia, restorative expanded functions, and patient assessment for myofunctional and sleep-related breathing disorders. As a lifelong learner, Kathy holds advanced training certificates in orofacial myofunctional therapy, dental sleep medicine for dental hygienists, and the Buteyko breathing method. Kathy’s work has been recognized by the Washington Association of Vocational Administrators –Outstanding Educator Award, the WDHA Educator of the Year Award, and the WDHA Martha Fales Award for contributions to the dental hygiene profession.
