Educational Objectives

After completing this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the anatomy and histology of the pterygomandibular triangle
  • Make an intelligent choice of LA product to use, and when
  • Apply technique selection with predictability
  • Choose between block, infiltration or both
  • Assess the value of some "tips and tricks" and newer technique variations

Abstract

Technique, pharmacology, operator and patient all interact to determine the predictability of success or failure of local anesthesia (LA) intra and extra orally, especially in the mandible. This includes understanding of the pertinent anatomy and histology of the pterygomandibular triangle.

There have been noticeable trends in popularity of “how-to” technique approaches and where and which LA’s may be more effectively administered in any particular circumstance. Mandibular anesthesia is trending towards increased reliance on infiltration using articaine for mandibular molars, single tooth anesthesia (STA) and application of the anterior, middle superior alveolar (AMSA) regional block in the maxilla which uses an almost sensation free palatal injection approach while adding the benefit of leaving the muscles of facial expression and external skin areas un-anesthetized (think cosmetic dimensions and smile distortion affecting esthetics of prosthetic dentistry). What about the 27 ga. 1” short needle utilization for inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) blocks? Where are we with administration of articaine for IAN and lingual n. blocks? Are there any tips and tricks that 95 years of clinical experience can share? If a block is needed, we’ll look at the Gow-Gates block made easy.

Increasing confidence in anesthetic technique is the goal. Do you dread the anxious, stressed out relative or alleged friend who insists on booking at 4:30 PM on a Thursday or Friday afternoon?

Take this course which attempts to separate facts from fiction related to technique, influential in success or failure of LA performance.
