Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, the oral healthcare provider will be able to:

  • Prepare for patient procedures effectively and comprehensively to improve patient and worker safety while decreasing the labor intensity of daily tasks.
  • Render patient treatment using the highest standards of aseptic technique that will decrease the risk for crosscontamination.
  • Clean, disinfect, and reprocess equipment and surfaces in a manner that is compliant with CDC recommendations and OSHA standards of patient care.
  • Recognize the importance of following a product’s instruction for use (IFU) provided by manufacturers.

Abstract

The dental environment is a complex mixture of cleaned, disinfected, and sterilized pieces of equipment and surfaces. Effective and proper preparation for procedures will improve patient safety and decrease worker stress and labor intensity of the day. When providers have all the needed equipment readily available in the open environment during procedures, the risk for cross-contamination is mitigated. This course will present best practices for patient procedures, starting with the preparation needed prior to seating a patient, how to carry out safe and effective dental procedures that avoid cross-contamination and breaks in the chain of asepsis, and how to properly break down after a procedure following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations as well as Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
